Planning your Mad Hatter’s tea party

Pick a date and venue

You have one birthday and 364 unbirthdays every year – the perfect excuse for a Mad Hatter’s tea party at any time of year! Pick a date for your party and then choose your venue – this party themes works perfectly indoors or outdoors but if you’re lucky enough to have good weather, we’d definitely recommend throwing your Alice in Wonderland tea party outside.

Setting the scene

Start by choosing a location for your Alice in Wonderland tea party and set the scene with lots of props and decorations. It doesn’t matter at all if your tables and chairs are a bit mismatched. In fact, the more mismatched, the better!

Pick up your party essentials

The next step is to pick up all your party essentials like plates, cups, napkins and tablecloths. A Mad Hatter’s tea party should be a little bit crazy so we’d recommend going with a bright and bold colour scheme. We chose these Mad Hatter’s tea party supplies for all the essentials and laid the table with this black and white check table runner for contrast.

Decorating your Mad Hatter’s tea party

As far as Mad Hatter’s tea party decorations go, mix big and striking decorations with a couple more subtle details. We love this Queen of Hearts balloon as a nod to the villainous character from Alice in Wonderland.

Presentation is key for an Alice in Wonderland party and there are plenty of cute ways to display your party food before you tuck in!

These teapot cupcake stands are the perfect way to present homemade cupcakes. We love the idea of presenting a few of them on a larger cake stand to make a table centrepiece or putting one next to each guest’s place setting.

Party games

Finally, plan a couple of fun party games to keep your mad hatters entertained! We’ve got tonnes of suggestions in our Alice in Wonderland party games blog post but here are some of our favourites:

Mad Hatter’s hat toss

Line all the players up at the starting line and give each one a hat. On the count of three, everyone throws their hat as far as they can and whoever flings it the furthest wins a prize!

‘You’re late!’ scavenger hunt

Hide lots of items Alice in Wonderland related items like clocks, teacups, hats and bunny rabbits, split the players into two teams and give them 60 seconds to find as many as they can. Whichever team finds the most items wins!

Make the Cheshire Cat smile

The aim of this game is to make the other players laugh – and whoever laughs first loses! Nominate one person to be ‘it’ and then it’s up to them to do whatever they can to make the other players laugh!
