Valentine’s day is all about love – and usually we just focus on romantic love.
But that’s not the only kind of love there is!
If you want to show a little love to yourself however, then we’ve got you covered.
Setting the Scene
While this is by no means a necessity – this Valentine’s Day is all about what YOU want – it’s much easier to relax in a tidy room. Even if all you do is clear a table and sofa, that’s fine! Of course if you enjoy cleaning then feel free to go further.
Treat yourself to a bouquet of flowers and arrange them somewhere in the room. Plants help us to feel more relaxed, and having something beautiful to look at might help you to feel more loving.
If it’s safe, set up a few candles.
Boosting the Happy Hormones
There are lots of easy ways to make yourself feel the same kind of chemicals we get from romance.
Touching other people or things is a guaranteed way to get the oxytocin flowing! Treat yourself to a professional massage – not only will you get that feel-good feeling, you might have a few knots ironed out!
You can also snuggle with your pet, if you have one and they are snugglable – it doesn’t really matter what creature you touch!
Run yourself a warm bath – studies show that oxytocin levels rise in response to warmth! Plus it makes you comfortable, you get to try out some of those new bath bombs you got for Christmas, and it’ll help you sleep soundly. Listening to soothing music while you soak will increase the effect.
Dance to your favourite songs
Not only is this a really sneaky way of getting in some exercise, it also boosts dopamine and reduces stress! So whether it’s Abba’s greatest hits or your favourite feel-good playlist, get your body moving to the music.
Get some nature
This might not be the best time of year to go outside, but we promise you that seeing some nature will help! If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, this could just be five minutes outside watching the grass sway. Alternatively, find a nice field or patch of woodland to wander through. But really enjoy it – stop and look at things along the way.
As we all know, chocolate is the solution to many problems! Dark chocolate in particular stimulates serotonin production, a chemical that simulates pleasure. The higher the cocoa or cacao percentage, the better it works, so maybe try out one of our vegan Seed and Bean bars – both Mandarin & Ginger and Mint Chocolate are a delicious and serotonin-boosting 72% cocoa!
Manifest your wishes
Saying things aloud or writing them down is a proven way to make a fact feel more real. Find some heart shaped tokens or notes and a beautiful box that you’re happy to leave as part of the décor, then get writing down your wishes, hopes and sentiments. Here are a few to get you started thinking about what you need to promise yourself.
I choose me!
I am worthy of good things
I will stay true to who I am
Hold onto your box of self-love mantras and look through them whenever you’re feeling down.
Do something just for you
It feels so hard to just take some time for yourself and do something you really want to do. If you needed an excuse, here it is – it’s Valentine’s day and you deserve to do something that’s just for you.
If the non-stop advertising and posts from your friends about their significant others is getting you down, turn it off! It’s a good idea to have a digital detox every now and then, and it’s hard to think of a better time than on a day all about YOU.
Ignore everyone else
Easy – this Valentine’s is about you, and absolutely no one else! Ignore the haters, the loved up couples and the holiday moaners. This holiday is about love, and in the immortal words of Ru Paul, if you can’t love yourself how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?
