How to Organise a Charity Bake Sale

How to Host a Charity Bake Sale - Great British Bake Off Style

Every year the Great British Bake Off inspires millions of people to take part in charity cake sales, and today we want to show you how to give yours a competitive edge by throwing a bake sale, Bake Off style!

It’s a fantastic way to fundraise in schools and offices, and we guarantee your competitors will be chomping at the bit for the honour of being crowned Bake Off champion!

Pick a charity to support

While hosting a charity bake off is loads of fun, the ultimate aim is to raise loads of dough for a good cause so start off by choosing a charity to support.

This could be a local charity or one that’s particularly close to your heart; it’s completely up to you.

Recruit a panel of judges

If you’re hosting an office bake sale, you’ll probably have people fighting over this job!

However, it’s important for the judges to be impartial, so make sure you select yours carefully. The title of Bake Off champion is a prestigious one after all!

Get baking!

This is the best part – particularly if loads of people get involved. You could set a theme like choc-tastic, lemon-licious or Mary Berry classics, OR you could just let you contestants bake whatever they want. It’s completely up to you!

It’s all for a good cause so don’t be too strict on making everyone bake. Shop-bought cakes obviously shouldn’t be allowed to enter the competition but the more cakes you have on the day, the more money you’ll raise in the bake sale afterwards.

What to make for a charity bake sale:

We’d recommend keeping your creations simple so that you can spend less money on ingredients, and more on donating. Here are a couple of simple suggestions:

  • Victoria sponges
  • Cupcakes
  • Rocky road
  • Tray bakes

But if you’d like to make a real showstopper, why not have a go at making a princess cupcake dress? It’s super easy but will definitely get you 10/10 for presentation from the judges!

Set up your Bake Off tent

It’s really easy to create a Bake Off-esque look with some pretty cardboard cake stands like these ones and some Union Jack bunting. Make sure you stick to a budget so you don’t eat into the profits you make from donations, but do have fun making your bake sale look cute and quaint in true GBBO style!

Do the taste test

Once everything’s set up, it’s time to gather the judges for the taste test! Make sure they don’t know whose cake is whose before they cast their verdict – this will only spoil the fun!

Once the winner has been chosen, award them with a certificate from the official GBBO party pack and let the bake sale begin!

Sell off your cakes

It’s probably a good idea to have a couple of people manning the cake sale and collecting money. Since it’s all for a good cause, we think around £2 is a fair price for a slice of cake or a cupcake. However, this is up to you!

Got lots of leftovers?

Once your charity bake sale is starting to die down, we’d suggest setting up an honesty box for selling off the leftovers. It involves trust but it’s a good way to make a little extra money once everyone’s gone back to their desks.
