Easy homemade pirate costume

Ahoy matey! Today we’re showing you how to make this easy homemade pirate costume using an old white t-shirt and some black wool for a beard.

It’s a really simple costume DIY (we promise) so even if you’re not the most craftily-inclined you can definitely give this one a go! Just follow our easy tutorial and then complete your pirate costume with cheap pirate accessories like a parrot, a sword or a hook!

Let’s get started…

How to make a pirate t-shirt

The t-shirt is the main part of this DIY pirate costume and it only has three steps so it’s a perfect last minute job. In fact, you’ve probably already got everything you need lying around at home.

What you need:

  • An old white t-shirt
  • Red ribbon (or an old shoe lace)
  • Scissors

Start by taking your scissors and cutting a jig-zag pattern out of the sleeves and bottom of the t-shirt. Don’t worry about making this too neat – pirates aren’t known for their tidiness!

Next, cut a small V-shape out of the neck of the t-shirt. Then cut two small slits on either side of the V and thread your red ribbon through.

If you don’t have any red ribbon to hand, use an old shoelace instead!

How to make a pirate beard

This is another easy part of your homemade pirate costume but it might take a little bit longer than the t-shirt. We’d recommend making it at least one day in advance of when you need it to make sure the glue has time to dry.

What you need:

  • Black felt
  • Black wool
  • Long piece of elastic
  • Scissors
  • Glue

What to do

First of all, you need to take a square piece of black felt and cut it to make the basic shape of the beard. We found the easiest way to get a symmetrical pirate beard was to fold the felt in half and cut out half a beard (remember to cut a hole for the mouth too).

It should end up looking something like this:

Then you need to cover your beard with short pieces of black wool (about 2 inches long).

It’s easiest to start at the bottom and work upwards; put a line of PVA glue along the bottom and stick your pieces of wool to it one by one. (This can be quite time-consuming, which is why we recommend doing it the night before you need it).

Carry on doing this layer by layer until the whole beard is covered in wool and it looks like a real pirate beard!

Cut two holes either side of the beard to attach a piece of elastic (adjust the length to fit whoever’s going to be wearing it) and your DIY pirate costume is ready for the party!
