Your New Year’s Eve celebrations may have to be turned down a notch once you’ve had kids, but that doesn’t mean you have to forfeit all the fun!
From party ideas to fun NYE activities that will keep them entertained until midnight, there are loads of fun things to do on New Year’s Eve with your kids.
So instead of going out this year, cancel the babysitter and take a look at our ten kid-friendly ways to ring in the new year as a family!
Family-friendly New Year’s Eve ideas
Let them stay up late… if they can!
First things first, if you’re celebrating your New Year’s Eve with children, them stay up!
Part of the fun of New Year is staying up late and one night a year won’t do your little ones any harm (they may end up falling asleep before midnight anyway!)
Throw a party at home
Going out is so last year… Why not throw a family New Year’s Eve party at home so everyone can join in the fun? Invite all your friends and family round and ask everyone to contribute some food and drink so you don’t have to spend hours preparing a buffet.
Then stock up on paper plates and cups so you don’t have to do any washing up the next morning and let people with young children stay over so they don’t have to do a long journey home late at night (if you’ve got enough room).
You could even put a fun twist on your New Year celebrations by making it a fancy dress party! It’ll make for some great photos of the night if you encourage everyone to go all out with their costumes.
We’d recommend picking a theme for everyone to stick to but steer away from the usual NYE fancy dress themes like masquerade that are more for adult parties. Choose something you can have fun with like TV and film characters, Star Wars or superheroes – take a look at our huge selection of fancy dress themes for inspiration.
Make some mocktails or drink non-alcoholic bubbly (make them feel grown-up)
Of course, alcohol won’t be on the agenda at a children’s New Year’s Eve party but a selection of mocktails and non-alcoholic bubbly like this would be perfect for making them feel extra specially grown up for staying up late!
Serve your non-alcoholic drinks for the kids in plastic champagne glasses and if you’re worried about your best glasses getting broken, do this for the adults too!
Play some NYE party games
Midnight can feel like a long time away if you don’t have any activities planned, so make sure you’ve got a couple of fun party games up your sleeve to keep everyone entertained while you wait for the big countdown. Take a look at our kids’ party game ideas for inspiration.
Set up a photo booth
Photo booths can be great fun and they’re a great opportunity for group photos! Make a sparkly backdrop using a glittery wall curtain or two and pick up loads of funny fancy dress accessories like hats, feather boas and fake moustaches for your guests (big and small!) to dress up in before they get their photo taken.
You could even pick up a pack of funny photo props on sticks like this for a quick transformation before the camera flashes!
Kids movie night
This is one of our favourite child-friendly New Year’s Eve ideas and it’s perfect if you fancy a chilled out sort of party after a hectic Christmas!
At an hour and a half a pop, films are a great way to keep your littluns entertained until midnight and it’s the perfect excuse to watch a couple more Christmas films before the decorations come down. Make it cosy by bringing your blankets and duvets downstairs and serving popcorn and hot chocolate!
Have a NYE balloon countdown
As for counting down to midnight, a balloon countdown is a fun way to create excitement for the big countdown at midnight.
It’s really easy to do – simply blow up up six balloons and starting at 7pm, write the time you’re going to pop it on each one. Then pin or blue tac them to the wall and when the clock strikes the hour, get popping!
