What you need:
- 22 cupcakes (homemade or shop-bought)
- A tray
- A wand
- A tiara
- Cake ribbon
- Cake sprinkles in your chosen colour
What to do:
Making a princess dress cake starts with baking a batch of cupcakes. You’ll need 22 in total to make the whole dress and a simple vanilla cupcake recipe will do. We’ve got one here that’s really easy to follow and once the cupcakes are out of the oven you can make them fancy with your choice of cupcake cases, icing and other decorations.
Pop plain shop-bought cupcakes into fancier cases for a really clever baking cheat!
Shop-bought cupcakes are fine too, of course, and you can easily make them look prettier by popping them into new, fancier cases like these ones and decorating them with your own icing.
However, we prefer making our own and we chose metallic pink cupcake cases, baby pink icing and silver sprinkles for a really cute, girly look. You’ll find everything you need to make some like ours over in our shop.
The most important thing is making sure you have enough cakes!
Once you’ve made your cupcakes, it’s time to put the dress cake together. This is really easy; the most important thing is making sure you have enough cakes! If you’re a baking beginner, we’d recommend icing your cakes before you lay them out. However, if you’re a more skilled icer you could line then up and ice them in one long continuous swirl like we did!
Take a look at our handy diagram to see how many cakes you need on each row – it goes one row of five, two rows of four and then three rows of three, however, this is not set in stone! Adapt it as you see fit.
By now you’ll really see your princess dress cupcake cake coming together (we told you it was easy!) and all that’s left it to add some princess accessories. We chose a tiara, a wand and a sparkly ribbon around the middle to make our dress look extra princessy. And voilà – your cupcake dress is finished!
If you like this idea but don’t have a reason to throw a princess party, you could take away the wand and the tiara and use white icing to turn it into a wedding dress for a unique wedding cake idea.
